Poland... Bierbza National
Park
In the spring and summer of 1998 I went to Poland
for my studies in Environmental biology. The first time I went for two
weeks with the course 'Landscape-Ecology' of the Department of Plant-Ecology
at the University in Groningen. This was
kind of a training for my friend Iwan and me, because later we would do
a research project after damaged spring mires in Drawa National Park, but
every biology-student interested in ecology really should sign up for this
course!!
We went with a group of some 15 students to Bierbza
National Park in eastern Poland, supervised by Ab Grootjans and (the
very tall) Rudi van Diggelen and once there soon joined by Leslaw Wolejko
(of the Agricultural University of
Szczecin) and his wife Alma.

The bus was likely to get stuck in the mud at least once a day!
Naturally some research had to be done and this meant studying the mire systems along the river Bierbza and the living and only slightly disturbed spring-mire near Sidra. To this purpose the group was divided into several groups, eacht studying a specific area. As our research later that summer would invlove several spring-mires Iwan and I were to go to Sidra, together with Lysbeth and Heidi.
The work was serious at times
And not so serious at other times......
Every working day brought the satisfaction of
going back but going home in the end
was worse than coming back from a holiday
Here we were, waiting for our train in Warshaw
and here the next morning at 5:30 AM when we had been
thrown out of the train in Hengelo because
we had no valid tickets!
So if you go on a course like this.. take this advice to heart:
MAKE SURE YOU BUY YOUR RETURN-TICKET
BEFORE
YOU LEAVE!!!
